We have a very special TB10 interview for you this week featuring Youtuber / Nintendo Ambassador / FGC enthusiast Roger DiLuigi (Twitter:@Rogersbase), we are extremely grateful that Roger took time out from his busy schedule to take part in our interview so make sure you hit up his YouTube channel (Link) and show him lots of love!
As always you can find the interview after the page break.
Question 1
RB: I’m Roger DiLuigi, but most people online know me as RogersBase! Right out of college, I began work as a contract product demonstrator for Nintendo in the Chicagoland area, but a little over three years ago, I moved to Los Angeles and began working as a social media consultant while doing YouTube on the side. Now I’m a full-time YouTuber with a focus on Nintendo games and Japanese entertainment.
Question 2
APC: When would you say you fell in love with competitive fighting games/eSports?
RB: My first introduction to the world of eSports was at local Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments when I was living in the Chicagoland area. I was a Mr. Game & Watch main and, though I could hold my own at locals, I wasn’t even close to the level of skill that the other players were displaying. I was determined to get better after the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and focused all of my efforts on training my Lucario. I’ve been actively involved with the FGC ever since.
Question 3
APC: What gaming achievement are you most proud of in your career so far?
RB: Definitely hitting 100,000 subscribers and getting my Silver YouTube Play Button! I never anticipated when I first became involved with the FGC that I was ever going to become a voice within the community. While I know there are tons of other YouTubers who’ve surpassed 100,000, it was still a really humbling experience for me and I’m incredibly proud of the work I put in to get to that point.
Question 4
APC: What was it about ARMS that made you decide to take it seriously on a competitive level?
RB: I’m sure the moment that I am about to bring up was a turning point for a lot of people who were watching the E3 ARMS Invitational but when Mr. Yabuki first displayed the Yabuki combo, my jaw dropped. I was fortunate enough to get an early review copy of the game from Nintendo and was testing out all of the characters on the roster but I didn’t think plays like that would be possible in ARMS.
Question 5
APC: What made you pick your main over the other characters in the game?
RB: When you choose a waifu, you stay with her for laifu. [Laughs] I loved Ribbon Girl’s design in the first trailer. I was tempted to switch mains after the reveals of Minmin and Twintelle but, I stayed true to my heart. [Laughs]
Question 6
APC: What is your favourite arm loadout & stage. (Please explain why)
RB: My favorite stage has to be Buster Beach. I know that might be a weird choice to a lot of people but I really enjoy the tropical atmosphere. The raised platform in the middle makes for some fun situations too. As for my favorite arm loadout, I usually pair Ribbon Girl with Seekie, Hydra and Cracker arms. I LOVE all of the homing arms and tested out a bunch of them on Ribbon Girl early on but since the Seekies have the Electric element, I stuck with them. I’ve found Hydra arms are the best way to deal heavy damage to people who jump spam AND also work really nicely while in the air. As for Cracker arms, I mainly wanted another way to deal out substantial damage but with a little more curve ability if the Hydra isn’t working out for me.
Question 7
APC: Thoughts on custom vs standard arms for tournaments.
RB: Once unlocked, all of the armload-outs are available to all of the characters so I don’t think customs are something that should be banned from tournaments. Keep in mind, I’m saying this from the perspective of somebody who is very selfish. [Laughs] I’m not nearly as good of a player without the Seekie arms on Ribbon Girl.
Question 8
APC: What advice would you give to someone just getting into the game?
RB: As with any fighting game, keep at it. It can be really easy to hop on Ranked right away and get frustrated with spammers but the key to victory in those types of situations is to simply watch your opponent’s movements.
Question 9
APC: What are your hopes for the future of ARMS?
RB: I mainly want to see the metagame grow. I know a lot of people who gave up on ARMS after about a week because they didn’t feel like it was deep enough but I’d argue that if you do your research, practice, and find the best arm loadout to both fit your playstyle and counter your weaknesses, you can have a ton of fun with the game competitively. I’m really looking forward to seeing ARMS on the mainstage at EVO Japan. I have a feeling that ARMS at EVO Japan is going to be another “Mr. Yabuki” moment for people. I can’t wait to see what other characters get added to the roster in the future too! I know Yabuki-san has mentioned that he doesn’t really want cross-over characters but I’d kill to have Luffy from One Piece join the fray. [Laughs]
Question 10
APC: Where can people find out more about you?
RB: You can find me at RogersBase on YouTube where I do videos on Nintendo, anime and manga: youtube.com/rogersbase. I’m @RogersBase on Twitter and Instagram too! Once my new computer is built, I’ll be streaming more on my Twitch as well: twitch.tv/rogersbase. Thanks for having me!
